Know the law

Cannabis in South Africa: the basics

Since the 2018 Constitutional Court ruling, adults may use, possess and grow cannabis in private. The Cannabis for Private Purposes Act (2024) now sets the framework.

18+

Legal age

Only adults may use or possess cannabis. Supplying anyone under 18 is a crime.

750g

Proposed possession limit

Dried cannabis per adult for private use, under draft regulations (Feb 2026).

5

Proposed plant limit

Plants per adult for private cultivation, under the same draft regulations.

0

Public use or driving

Don't use cannabis in public, near children, or before driving. Keep it out of sight when you travel.

Please note: the 750 g and 5-plant figures come from draft regulations the Department of Justice published for public comment in February 2026. They still need Parliament's approval, so check justice.gov.za for the current position. This is general information, not legal advice.

What the research says

Cannabis has been part of Southern African life for centuries. Here's what modern science has found.

Your body has its own cannabis system

Scientists discovered the endocannabinoid system in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It's a network of receptors that helps regulate mood, appetite, sleep and pain, and your body makes its own cannabinoids, such as anandamide.

Proven relief for chronic pain

A major review by the US National Academies found conclusive or substantial evidence that cannabis is effective for treating chronic pain in adults.

Eases nausea from chemotherapy

The same review found conclusive evidence that oral cannabinoids help prevent and treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.

Helps with muscle spasms in MS

There is substantial evidence that cannabinoids improve the muscle spasms that people with multiple sclerosis report.

CBD is an approved medicine

In 2018 the US FDA approved a purified CBD medicine (Epidiolex) to treat two rare, severe forms of childhood epilepsy, the first cannabis-derived medicine it ever approved.

A lower risk of fatal overdose

Unlike alcohol or opioids, a fatal overdose from cannabis is unlikely. Taking too much can still cause anxiety, nausea or a racing heart, which is why dose matters.

Ten tips for a better, safer session

Based on Canada's Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines and the advice our team gives every day.

Start low, go slowBegin with a small amount and give it time. You can always have more, but you can't have less.
Be patient with ediblesEdibles can take up to 2 hours to kick in and can last 6–12 hours. Wait at least 2 hours before having more.
Know your strengthHigher THC isn't always better. Products with less THC, or with some CBD, give a gentler experience.
Don't mix with alcoholCombining the two increases impairment and the chance of feeling unwell.
Never drive impairedWait at least 6 hours after inhaling before driving, and longer after edibles. Better still, get a lift.
Breathe easyAvoid inhaling deeply or holding smoke in. It doesn't increase the effect but does harm your lungs.
Hydrate and snackKeep water nearby and eat something beforehand. Your body will thank you.
Lock it away at homeEdibles look like sweets. Store all cannabis securely, out of reach of children and pets.
Know when to skip itAvoid cannabis if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you or close family have a history of psychosis.
Too much? Don't panicFind a calm spot, sip water, breathe slowly. It will pass. Get medical help if you have chest pain or feel very unwell.
